3D Modeling

I've created various types of 3D models. Some of those are showcased on this page. I am mainly specialised in (re)creating historical buildings.

Models For 3D Printing

3D printing began as a hobby for me, but it quickly evolved into a side job. I usually design my own models, initially using Maya, but now I primarily use Blender.

Historical Buildings

I used to live in IJsselstein, a small city with lots of historical buildings. When I began 3D printing, I wanted to create something from my city, so one of my first prints was the 'Castle Tower.' This followed my creation of the Domtoren, a famous tower in nearby Utrecht. I started selling my 3D prints in a local shop in IJsselstein, which motivated me to expand my collection and create more buildings.

How to Make a 3D Printable Model

I always start by gathering enough reference material, such as photos, drone videos, or sketches. Once I have sufficient references, I begin modeling in either Maya or Blender. When creating a 3D model for printing, you don’t need to worry about UVs, allowing more time to focus on the details.

A 3D printable model requires slightly exaggerated details and shapes to ensure they are clearly visible. For models with overhangs, I prefer to separate them into multiple parts. This approach eliminates the need for supports, saving both time and material.

The Battle For Castle Ysselstyn

This was my graduation project for Kunstacademie St. Joost, where I graduated with honors.

For this project, I recreated the Castle of IJsselstein, which was destroyed in 1888 for its resources, leaving only a single tower remaining.

I partnered with Museum IJsselstein to give the project a meaningful destination. Today, the VR experience is used for educational purposes in Museum IJsselstein.

3D Low Poly Castle

For this project I recreated the castle of IJsselstein. I used a low poly style, because it had to be playable on a Quest 2 VR headset.

Reference Materials

One thing I believe is really important is maintaining authenticity and to be true to history. When I started this project, I visited the castle tower to take photos, both inside and outside. I also visited the museum on several occasions to study the miniature models of the castle. However, that wasn’t enough; I wanted more reference material. Fortunately, there were many sketches and paintings depicting different situations and angles of the castle throughout the ages. I combined all this information to accurately recreate the castle and the surrounding area.

Tina's Toy Factory VR

The original game is a very simple sprite game. We wanted to bring this game to VR, but with 3D models and a complete factory environment. For this game I've created a couple of simple models.

Toy Factory

All the models I created were made in Blender. I didn't texture or optimize the models because another team member was responsible for texturing. All models have multiple parts that can be used as parts to construct the complete toy. In the pictures you can see the sprite most of the models were based on.

Lamborghini

When I began my internship at Hectic Electric in 2017, my first task to learn Maya was creating a 3D model of a Lamborghini Huracan. I am still proud of that accomplishment.

Low-Poly model

D-Day Enhanced is a low-poly game, and we were planning to add more weapons. To start, I chose to prototype the FG42, as shown below.
